Darkness always fascinated me. It brought this unsettling feeling of fear of that which can’t be seen. Things that live only where reality meets imagination.
What you thought you knew suddenly takes on a new form. A tree might turn into a monster with crooked limbs. A lamp beneeth branches becomes a mysterious source of otherworldly light.
However to paint darkness is no easy thing. How to recognize and mix the right colors when you can’t see them?
With the aid of headlamp it can be done. Although still with great difficulties. Light coming from artificial lamps usually has wrong temperature. Sometimes it’s too strong and the wet canvas glares too much. Battery might get depleted or I get spooked by strange noises coming from the void behind me.
If I prepare well and make a plan. If I know exactly what and how to paint it. Then I might succeed.
