Finaly some snow fell here in Prague!… Well, it’s gone already, but still I managed to take my gear and go out couple of times. And following four studies are what came out. My biggest concern were beautiful colors of light and shadows on the snow. Did I succeed in capturing them?

Otakar Lebeda(1877-1901), another of my favorite czech artists, same generation like Slavicek and one of the few great landscape painters of our country. Although he shot himself at age of 24, he managed to leave for us an icredible collection of paintings.

Too bad that just few of them can be found on the internet in sufficient quality.

Another of my most favorite and most inspirational painters. Check out his loose and yet precise brushstrokes. Each has it’s meaning, each describes something. Sorolla suggests rather than renders.

Digital environments

John Singer Sargent

“Probably the most underestimated artist of 19th century” and most importantly my most favorite artist of all time. To me, he was able to capture light and atmosphere even better then more famous french impressionists. His official portraits are fine example of perfect craft. And his vivid watercolors remain unrivaled even today. Just see examples bellow.

If you want to know more, I will gladly redirect you to great site dedicated to Sargent. They have almost all his artwork stored in there in chronological order and with huge amount of additional information. It’s pleasure to browse it. I promise you that.

Glass

Ultramarin blue, kadmium yellow pale, kadmium red light, titanium white – just these 4 colours and little bit of solvent and everything is possible.

Anyway, I’d like to share with you few quick still-lifes from recent weeks. Glass and light in it was my focus this time.

And finally, I’m starting to use more paint! For long time I’ve been too afraid to waste it. How foolish that was!

I get fascinated by night over and over. Sometimes, despite wind and cold, I go out, holding a sketchbook and doodling incredible shapes of shadows and glaring lights.

This work was done in the studio. But with help of many direct studies you might have seen in my older posts. It pretty much captures what I see when I look out of my window.

Mini atmoshpere studies part 2

Here comes second pack of quick studies of atmosphere. To keep it fast and simple I do these using only limited color pallete of yellow, red, blue and white and two filbert brushes n. 8. One for light colors and one for dark.
